2026 제5회 제주비엔날레는 제주의 토착문화가 북방 문명과 만나 흩어지고(허끄다), 모이고(모닥치다), 다시 변용(이야홍)되어 온 과정에 주목합니다. 이번 비엔날레는 제주 민요의 후렴구인 ‘이야홍(Iyahong)’을 핵심 개념으로 하여, 흐르고 섞이며 다시 태어나는 변용의 과정을 함축합니다. 이를 통해 사물과 자연, 인간과 신이 공존하고 공생하며 터득해 온 생존의 방법과 그 미학을 변용의 섬 제주를 통해 제시합니다. 제5회 제주비엔날레는 지구와 인류가 충돌하고 융합해 온 문명의 과정을 되짚으며, 신인류 생태적 전망을 제시하고 그 새로운 시작의 태동이 제주에서 움트고 있음을 널리 알리고자 합니다.

The 2026 5th Jeju Biennale traces the metamorphic processes through which Jeju’s indigenous culture has mingled with northern civilizations. To this end, the Biennale takes Iyahong, the refrain of a traditional Jeju folk song, as its central concept. It presents the ways of survival and the aesthetics cultivated through the coexistence and symbiosis of things and nature, humans and deities. By retracing the civilizational processes through which the Earth and humanity have collided and converged, the 5th Jeju Biennale proposes post-human modes of being, along with a post-anthropological horizon in the emergence of Jeju’s new beginning.

2026 제5회 제주비엔날레는 제주의 풍토성, 토착문화, 그리고 북방 문명과의 융합 과정에 주목하며, 세 개의 파트로 구성된다. 제주도립미술관 전관, 제주돌문화공원, 그리고 원도심 일대에는 비엔날레의 핵심 키워드인 유배·돌문화·신화를 예술 언어로 변용한 작품들이 다채롭게 배치되어, 집중과 연결, 재탄생으로 순환하는 ‘이야홍’의 흐름을 구현한다. 이번 비엔날레에는 국내외 약 69개 팀의 작가가 참여하며, 제주 및 국내외 젊은 작가들의 실험적 프로젝트와 동시대적 감각을 담은 다매체·관객 참여형 작업들이 한자리에 펼쳐진다. ‘예술과 감응하는 제주(Art Enchanted Jeju)’에서, 세계와 접속(Contact)하고, 지속(Practice)하며, 결속(Solidarity)함으로써, 오늘날 국제사회가 함께 겪는 아픔에 대한 공감과 연대를 확장하고, 불안의 시대를 극복하는 공동체적 감응의 장을 마련하고자 한다.

The 2026 5th Jeju Biennale is structured in three parts, with a focus on Jeju’s distinctive natural and human milieu, its indigenous culture, and its convergence with northern civilizations. It unfolds across the Jeju Museum of Art, Jeju Stone Culture Park, and the old downtown area. Across these sites, works presenting artistic interpretations of the Biennale’s core keywords—Human, Stone, and Deities—embody the flow of Iyahong through convergence, connection, and becoming. Approximately 69 artists and artist collectives from Korea and abroad will participate in this Biennale. The exhibition brings together experimental projects by emerging artists from Jeju and beyond, alongside interactive media works and process-based works shaped through audience participation. Under the vision of ‘Art Enchanted Jeju’, the Biennale aspires to broaden empathy and solidarity in response to the pain shared across today’s global community. By cultivating Contact with the world, sustaining Practice, and reinforcing Solidarity, it seeks to create a space of collective resonance that confronts and moves beyond the anxieties of our time.
